Monterrey Holland English 8-6 18 May 2013 Monterrey Holland English 8-6 18 May 2013 HERMINE (MIEP) GIES In January 1933, the Nazis came into power of Germany and murdered Jehovah Witnesses, homosexuals, and Jews (â€Å"Holocaust History†). Almost everyone in Germany was murdered, even the ones who were part of the Nazis but rebelled against Hitler. So how were Anne Frank and her family able to make it? Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father, asked some of his staff members to hide his family from the Nazis (â€Å"Miep Gies†). One of the helpers were a good friend and very loyal to their concerns, her name was Miep Gies. Hermine (Miep) Santrouschitz was born on February 15, 1909. After World War 2, her parents sent her to Netherlands to recover from tuberculosis and malnutrition (â€Å"Miep Gies†). (4)She decided to stay at the Netherlands with her foster family because she liked it so much. (3)This is where she gets her nickname, Miep. Amsterdam is also where she met her boyfriend, Jan Gies (â€Å"Miep Gies†). In the 1930’s, Miep got a job in the Opekta company, a jam making business. This company was where Otto and Miep meet, and they became good friends. On July 16, 1941, Jan and Miep were married. (â€Å"Miep Gies†)While Otto was at war, he asked if the newly wedded couple would be willing to risk their lives by hiding his family from the Nazis. (2)They agreed quickly, and they helped as much as they could to every demand. (1) On August 4, 1944 a Dutch police officer found out were the Franks had been from an anonymous person(â€Å"Holocaust History†). That same day, the police officer raided the secret annex arrested the Franks but dropped Anne’s diary(â€Å"Miep Gies†). To keep Anne’s diary alive Miep recovered the diary and kept it in her personal drawer. After about a month, the Franks were sent to concentration camps. (Laquer 222-23)Margot ,Anne’s sister, and Anne were sent to labor camps in Aushwitz. Their mother was sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. All three of them passed away, and the two girls died due to Typhus. (â€Å"Holocaust History†) In June 1945,Otto came back from war unharmed and lived with Miep and Jan, due to his loss (â€Å"Miep Gies†). Miep gave the diary to Otto ,and he decided to copy sections that were interesting to others (Laquer 222-23). After a while Miep had a son named Paul so she felt like I was time for to retire. On January 26, 1993 Jan died, at age 88, and Miep Gies officially was a widow. Seventeen years after her husband’s death, she died, at age 100, on January 11, 2010(â€Å"Miep Gies†) Miep once said, â€Å"But even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room†(Salamone). Miep Gies was still involved in Anne’s home,Fans, and her life. This quote shows how loyal and helpful she really was. †People should never think that you have to be a very special person to help those who need you†(Salamone). Miep Gies was a women who was very loyal and kept her promises.
